Welcome to Day 5….please watch the video or read the transcript and enjoy today’s challenge.
Today we’re going to talk about something that’s so important because it affects the relationship you have with your team, and that’s trust.
Now, you might be thinking, ‘what on Earth does trust have to do with working smarter and not harder?’
Well, the thing is that your team is your business, and you can’t do anything without them. You have them for a reason, and by having that level of trust in place you can go about your day knowing that they’re making decisions, and solving problems and that they’re capable of doing their work without you standing over them every second of every day.
Not taking the time to build that level of trust leads of a lifetime of micro managing, and a very un-empowered and demotivated workforce which isn’t good for business at all.
The thing is that trust doesn’t happen over night. If you think about your partner or your best friend potentially it could have taken years to build up the trust that you’re enjoying right now. It’s going to take time but it’s well worth the effort.
The best way to do this is to get to know your team and allow them to get to know you so they can understand you as a person. Find out their aspirations, and their hobbies and their families. Learn what brought them to where they are today and what their story is, and you tell them yours. What’s your background, and your vision for the future and share your successes and even your failures and get to know each other.
The thing about trust is that although it takes a long time to build up, it can take seconds to destroy so work to maintain that trust. If you agree to do something, make sure you do it. Deliver your promises and follow up. Yes it might feel small to you, but it may be a lot to the other person, and it all adds up to build that trust.
Your challenge for today is really get to know your team and build and maintain the trust that you have.
See you tomorrow.
