Finally please do let me know your findings and your successes by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org with DAY 1 WORKING SMARTER CHALLENGE in the subject heading.
In today’s session we’re going to be doing some work to find out exactly what your day is like.
So often when I talk to people about what their day is like, quite often they describe it as being hectic, treading water or spinning lots of plates.
But they’re unable to pin point exactly what the problem is and where they need to make the changes.
Today you’ll be able to see exactly where you need to be focusing.
Your day consists of loads of things that you’ve got to get done. You’ve probably got a to do list as long as your arm, and it’s made up of lots of tasks that you’ve planned, and often tasks that you’ve not planned. All taking up valuable time in your working day. The problem is that working like that doesn’t help you move forward. Instead by really having a look and analysing your working day you can see exactly what you need to do to make changes, what you need to be focusing on, where other people can lend a hand, and what you can do to stop some of the interruptions and unplanned activities that are being thrown at you.
So the first challenge is for you to do a task log. You can download your copy here
A task log is a way of having a record of everything that you do every single day so you can see a picture of your activities. Now, before you run for the hills, download the task log here and here’s what you do:
As you go about your day make a note of everything that you do, any interruptions that you get, any unplanned activities, any time you take a break, when you pick up the phone etc, literally everything that you do, and make a note of what you’ve done and how long it takes.
Now, I know that you’re probably thinking, Barbara, I’m busy enough without you giving me more work to do, but this is short term pain for long term pain, as by doing this for a couple of days, you’ll be able to see what your day really looks like and where you’re leaking time.
We’ll also be using this information later on in the challenge.
So, have a go at this for a couple of days, and I’ll be back in 2 days with the next challenge.
