3 ways to get your team back on your to do list
Not long ago I read a comment someone made on an article, that the worst things about being a leader was the people. Do you agree?
This made me smile when I read it, as how often do we find ourselves seeing other people as interruptions and something that stops us from getting our ‘real’ work done?
Regardless of our role, the one thing that we all have in common is that we have to interact with people.
Some days this is easy to do, on others not so much – but as a leader, people need to be right at the top of the ‘to do’ list and something that we definitely make time for.
People need to speak. People need to be listened to, and taken notice of. People need to be appreciated and valued. People need to be given feedback to, people need to be developed and coached, people need support, and above all people need to get to know the person behind your title as people need to build up trust.
Making time for people is the most important thing on every leaders to do list. It is the one thing that will really drive performance and is the one thing that will turn out to be the best thing about being a leader.
Here are 3 tips to get you started
1. Be visible
Regardless of how big your company is, take the time to work round and say ‘hello’ to people. Ask them what they’re working on, and engage in conversation. You’ll be surprised how much you learn.
2. Be curious
There is no such thing as a daft question. Questions encourage discussion, new ideas, suggestions and problem solving, so ask away…
3. Diarise time for one to one meetings
It’s easy to let one to one meetings slip due to other things, but these meetings really are important. They allow you the time to really get to know your team and learn what motivates them and what they need from you.
